A Little About..

Grace Mugabe – From First Lady to Controversial Power Player

Once dubbed “Gucci Grace” by the tabloids, Grace Mugabe rose from presidential typist to First Lady and one of Zimbabwe’s most polarizing figures. Her story is a whirlwind of luxury, ambition, and political theatre — the tale of a woman who dared to reach for power in a man’s world.

Born in 1965 in Benoni, South Africa, Grace began working in the State House typing pool in the 1980s, where she caught the eye of then-Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. Their relationship blossomed into marriage, transforming Grace into Zimbabwe’s most talked-about woman. While her early years as First Lady were relatively quiet, the 2000s saw her reinvent herself as a businesswoman and philanthropist, establishing the Grace Mugabe Children’s Home and the Gushungo Dairy Estate.

Her name became synonymous with opulence — designer clothes, luxury cars, and international shopping sprees — earning her the nickname that would follow her forever. Yet beneath the glamour was a politically ambitious woman. As her husband’s health declined, Grace stepped into the political spotlight, leading the ZANU–PF Women’s League and positioning herself as a possible successor to Mugabe. Her fierce campaign against perceived rivals, including then–Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, became front-page news and arguably hastened the 2017 military intervention that ousted Mugabe from power.

Since her husband’s death in 2019, Grace has kept a low profile, splitting her time between Harare and her Mazowe estate. While she remains a divisive figure, few can deny her impact on Zimbabwean politics and pop culture — a First Lady who refused to stay in the shadows.
