James Makamba – The Media Mogul Who Keeps Reinventing Himself
Dr. James Makamba is a man who has seen it all — businessman, broadcaster, philanthropist, and political insider. Once one of Zimbabwe’s most recognizable entrepreneurs, Makamba has navigated fame, fortune, and controversy with the poise of a true survivor.
Born in Mt Darwin, Makamba’s rise began in the broadcasting industry as a radio and TV personality in the 1970s. Charismatic and eloquent, he transitioned from media to business after independence, founding Telecel Zimbabwe, one of the country’s first mobile network operators. The company’s success cemented his reputation as a telecommunications pioneer.
However, Makamba’s career has been anything but smooth. In the 2000s, he faced legal troubles and self-imposed exile amid rumors of political tension and business disputes. Yet true to form, he made a spectacular comeback, expanding his ventures into property, mining, and international telecommunications.
Today, Makamba is recognized as a thought leader, often speaking about entrepreneurship and resilience.
